WC50 meets GP2

Garry Saunders’ former WC50 MINI appeared within these very pages in the November-December 2012 issue and what stood him out from other owners of this very limited special edition is that he went down the tuning route.

Now he’s moved up in the world to a GP2, thanks to the persuasive tones of Mersey MINI’s Rob McGivern! Garry tells us that he had been discussing the merits of the GP2 with Rob for some time and decided to take the plunge. Rob put him in touch with Stewart at Halliwell Jones MINI Chester and two months later Garry completed a 500-mile round trip from East Sussex to collect his new pride and joy. He arranged to meet up with Rob and his fiancée Liz for an impromptu photoshoot of their old WC50s alongside their new GP2s.  Now that’s a rare line-up if ever we saw one...

A-head of himself

This 2004 Pure Silver R53 is mechanic Lee Head’s first MINI which he’s transformed from standard. He took the opportunity over the winter period to tart it up and fitted a lightened clutch and flywheel, uprated suspension bushes, OMP upper and lower strut braces, a full Samco hose kit, 13mm spacers and Eibach lowering springs. Phew! Lee tells us he loves his MINI to bits and takes it to all the shows, as well as plenty of MINI runs. But it seems there’s still plenty to do on his list. In the future he’s going for a 15 per cent reduced supercharger pulley and a custom exhaust system. Pretty impressive, eh?

Here’s to you, Mrs Robinson

Now there’s patriotic and there’s patriotic! ‘Chillie Millie’ as this 2002 Cooper is known as, belongs to Julia Robinson who transformed her from standard. Since acquiring her three years ago, Julia’s added bonnet stripes, a Union Jack roof and mirror caps, exterior chrome, JCW black rims and a JCW strut brace. But she hasn’t stopped there. Inside, the interior has been JCW’d too, with dash, gear knob and handbrake handle and the patriotic theme continues. Last year, Julia entered her MINI into a couple of shows and came first in class in both; one of these being Mini in the Park. Not only that; Chillie Millie is also the mascot of the care home where Julia works and the residents like having their photo taken with her MINI, especially on themed days such as the Queen’s Jubilee and VE Day. This is one very admired MINI, worthy of your votes!

Joker in the pack

Birmingham-based Ali Mir is lucky enough to have only ever owned MINIs; his first car was a 1.4 MINI One, before saving up for three years to be able to afford his current R56 Cooper S JCW in 2011. Ali’s made the most of the JCW accessories catalogue and enhanced his MINI with JCW Recaro leather/Alcantara bucket seats and JCW chequered mats, plus gone for lots of carbonfibre – bonnet scoop, mirror caps, handbrake, gear knob and steering wheel inserts. But the most unusual and uniquely different add-on has to be the custom Batman-themed dash! Exterior wise, there was no hanging about for Ali, who’s already got his hands on a GP2 rear diffuser! He’s done a lot of MINI events and trackdays in his JCW and taken in the sights of MINI United 2012, Goodwood circuit, Castle Combe, Brands Hatch, Santa Pod Raceway and Monaco circuit. We don’t think anything could dampen the enthusiasm of this MINI owner!

Power Broker

Having discounted a Cooper S, Tim Cain’s first ever MINI is this JCW GP and it’s good for 240bhp! We follow his story...

Normally our first experience of driving is not in our own car, but one belonging to a driving instructor. For those of us who’ve been behind the wheel for a decade or two, more often than not that meant the humdrum yet ultra reliable Nissan Micra was the tool of choice [including me – Ed]. The biggest incentive to pass your test back then was to no longer have to drive a Nissan Micra. Any other car would do.
